Call for Participation
We are pleased to announce the 15th EATEL Summer School on Technology Enhanced Learning (JTELSS) that will take place on June 1-8, 2019 in Bari, Italy. The summer school is organised by the European Association of Technology Enhanced Learning – EATEL (http://ea-tel.eu/).
The EATEL summer school provides a stimulating learning environment where participants get opportunities to develop research skills, increase their knowledge base, collaborate with others in their own and complementary research areas, engage in debate, have access to experts in the field, and discuss their own work.
The programme covers topics from a broad range of domains which contribute to advancing the field of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL). TEL research projects are encouraged to provide doctoral candidates with a perspective of the state-of-the-art research under study in their working groups. The programme will also include practical and methodological workshops as well as opportunities for PhD students to develop their personal research, discuss their doctoral work and build bridges for future collaborations with experts in the field and peers across Europe. The summer school is open for PhD students and instructors from all countries.
Call for Workshops
If you would like to offer workshops at the summer school, we invite you to submit a workshop proposal (template: http://bit.ly/JTELSS19workshop) describing your contribution, which should demonstrate how your presentation/activity will benefit the PhD students attending the summer school (mainly early to mid-stage). EATEL summer school offers three types of workshops: thematic (covering one or multiple TEL research topics), methodological (focusing on research methods in TEL) and informal (socializing, gaming, sports and more). If your workshop proposal is selected, it will be published on the summer school website.
Note that it is possible to submit multiple workshops. It is no longer possible to submit lecture sessions, as we plan to invite five keynote speakers.
We encourage interactive sessions rather than information delivery, and your proposal should include details about how you plan to engage the PhD students. Workshops are usually 90 minutes. Some workshops run 2 x 90 minutes. Workshops should normally provide hands-on opportunities to work with new technologies or develop research techniques.

Please note that workshop organizers are expected to cover the costs of their trip and accommodation (in some cases, it is covered through their TEL research projects).
PhD students applying to participate in the summer school are also invited to propose workshops. In this case, they must make TWO summer school submissions: the PhD student proposal and the workshop proposal.

Call for PhD student applications
PhD students should submit applications online no later than February 22, 2019. Please download the template of the “PhD student application”: http://bit.ly/JTELSS19phdapplication. It contains a three-page summary of your PhD work. PhD students are required to attach a letter of support from their PhD advisors approving the application.
Fill in the template, and upload it together with the letter from your PhD advisor to the summer school submission system at EasyChair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=jtelss2019). In the submission system, please, select the correct submission type: “PhD student application”.

Venue and accomodation
The hosting city of the Summer School 2019 is Bari, the second largest city of Southern Italy and capital of Apulia (or Puglia) region, located on the Adriatic Sea. Named the fifth largest and the most populated province in Italy and the city of Saint Nicholas, Bari carries a population of 327.000 inhabitants, with a metropolitan area of 1.3 million inhabitants. Bari has become one of the top commercial and industrial leaders in Italy. Along with the port, the other strong activity of the city of Bari is the university sector. Bari has two main public universities: the University of Bari “Aldo Moro”, and the Polytechnic University of Bari.
Bari is a historic but forward-looking town with a high percentage of young people and migrants lending its vigour. Bari has an international airport also known as the Karol Wojtyla Airport. Located around 11km from the city centre, the airport can be easily reached by train or by bus. Bari airport serves 50 different destinations all over Europe (http://www.aeroportidipuglia.it/homepagebari).
The Summer School will take place in Hotel Riva del Sole (https://hotelrivabari.com/), a 4-star resort located in Giovinazzo, 15 kilometres from Bari and 10 Kilometres from the airport. The Hotel is built on the coastline, at about 200 metres from the beach. There is a private stony beach equipped with umbrellas and beds.
The hotel features a restaurant, a pizzeria, an outdoor swimming pool, a tennis court, a panoramic terrace, a garden, and a banquet hall. There is public transportation going both to Giovinazzo and to Bari. People can ride safely their bikes using a bike path separated from the main road.
The main conference room will be the Austro Hall. The hall is a very spacious and bright room with windows facing the seaside. The secondary conference room is the Sala Melograno.

Cost of Summer School
The EATEL summer school follows a non-profit scheme. The organizing committee members work as volunteers to make the event possible. The educational program is provided free of charge. The cost of the school covers accommodation, meals, excursions and printed materials.
PhD-student package
We encourage PhD students to attend the entire event. We offer a special discounted offer: “PhD-student package”. It covers the following:
- Accommodation for 7 nights (check in on June 1 and check out on June 8) in a double room (two PhD students of the same gender share a double room)
- Meals (full board: from dinner on June 1 to breakfast on June 8)
- Sunday full-day excursion
- Wednesday half-day excursion
- Wednesday Gala dinner

The price of the “PhD-student package” when registering before the Early-bird deadline is €670.
The price of the “PhD-student package” when registering after the Early-bird deadline is €720.

For the instructors who wish to attend the entire event, we offer a special discounted offer: “Instructor package”. It covers the following:

The price of the “Instructor package” when registering before the Early-bird deadline is €845.
The price of the “Instructor package” when registering after the Early-bird deadline is €895.
Instructors can choose to attend only a part of the event. The corresponding options will be available in the registration system.
Funding sources
PhD students can use different funding schemes to cover the cost of the summer school. As scholarships are only available for applicants from low-income countries (see next section), we advise you to look for local or university funding. The EATEL summer school will provide great value to the progress of your research and studies. The contents of the school can extend or replace some of your courses.
Another option to cover the cost is to apply for an Erasmus+ teacher mobility funding (https://ec.europa.eu/programmes/erasmus-plus/opportunities/staff-teaching_en). Instructors who plan to deliver workshops often use funding from research projects to cover the cost. The EATEL summer school is a primary event in Europe for dissemination and networking in the Technology-Enhanced Learning community.
Scholarships
From this year, EATEL will provide a limited number of scholarships. The scholarship will include a “PhD-student package” and will cover accommodation, meals, excursions and printed materials. The scholarships will not include a travel grant, and the participants are expected to cover the travel themselves.
A limited number of scholarships will be distributed, and EATEL does not guarantee that every eligible applicant will receive a scholarship. The scholarships will be distributed to PhD-student applicants from low, lower-middle and upper-middle income countries (from all regions of the World). As an example, the European countries from these two groups include Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Georgia, Kosovo, FYR Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Russian Federation, Serbia, Turkey and Ukraine. Local participants
For local PhD students and instructors from the nearby regions, we offer a special rate of €385, which includes accommodation in double room, full board, printed materials, excursion on Wednesday and Gala dinner. For these guests arrival is expected on Monday morning June 3 and departure on Friday June 7.

The social program includes a full-day trip on Sunday June 2 to Grotte di Castellana (http://grottedicastellana.it), Trulli di Alberobello (https://www.alberobello.com/en/) and Polignano a Mare (http://www.polignanoamare.com).
One half-day visit on Wednesday, June 5 including a tour at the Fablab of the Polytechnic University of Bari (http://www.fablabpoliba.org/) and guided tour in the old town of Bari.
